Water beauty benefitsMarch 22 is World Water Day.

Ever wondered why almost everyone who has glowing skin says the secret to it is drinking lots of water? If you think it is just a ploy to hide the real reason, you are mistaken. While there are other factors which come into play to give a flawless complexion, water is undoubtedly one of the main ones. It has tons of benefits for your skin and can keep several skin problems at bay. We list some of water’s beauty benefits.

Keeps the skin looking young – Want your skin to look supple and fresh always? Drink plenty of water. Start your day with a glass of lukewarm water, add honey or squeeze a lemon for added benefits. Water helps flush out toxins from your body and helps cells rejuvenate. This keeps the skin supple. Experts at University of Wisconsin Hospitals note that ‘the skin is an organ, and, as with other organs, its cells are predominantly made up of water. When these cells do not get adequate amounts of water, skin is likely to become dry, flaky and be more prone to wrinkles.’

Rehydrates the skin – External factors like alcohol, pollution, heat, smoking, etc dehydrate our skin making it look dull and lifeless. Therefore, it becomes essential that apart from using face packs externally, you also rehydrate your skin from within by drinking water. An instant relief for sunburnt skin is washing your face with water or rubbing a cube of ice on it.

Clears your skin – Have dark spots or acne on your face? Take into account how much water you drink every day and increase the quantity to at least 8 glasses throughout the day. When you don’t drink enough water, every process in your body gets affected – from digestion to skin renewal. This leads to several problems. Nip it in the bud by drinking more water and you will soon notice a clearer looking skin. It makes for a good detox tonic giving you better skin.

Keeps hair healthy – Water acts as a perfect remedy to protect your hair from getting damaged. Take a cold rinse after you shampoo your hair to close the cuticles which prevent any damage to the hair shaft. Before you go for a swim in chlorinated water, wet your hair with normal water. This prevents it from chlorine’s ill-effects to a large extent.

Comes in handy in any form – Both hot and cold water and even steam are good for the skin and hair. Of course, you choose a treatment based on the problem but it does come in handy. While hot water and steam will open clogged pores, a cold compress will help close them after due cleaning. This helps keep blackheads, pimples away.

So if you want radiant skin, the first step towards it is by having a glass of water. If you are one of those who forgets to drink water, you should make conscious efforts till it becomes a habit. Set a reminder, download an app for it or keep a bottle of water next to you and in your bag always. These small steps will ensure that you increase your intake even if you aren’t thirsty and its benefits will soon reflect on your skin.
